These Cheesy Hot Dog Tartlets are a quick and easy appetizer, perfect for your game day gathering or a party. Puff pastry sheets, hot dog slices, sautéed mushroom, and melted cheese baked together into fun handheld snacks.

Recipes like these Cheesy Hot Dog Tartlet appetizers and other easy snack recipes are great for game-day gatherings, parties or any time for that matter. What’s not to like about simple appetizer recipes that require only a handful of ingredients?

Whether you’re a fan of sports or not, you can enjoy these hot dog appetizers. It’s a super simple recipe that uses pastry sheets, sautéed mushrooms, shredded cheddar cheese, and hot dog slices.

Baked into puffed pastry circles, the hot dog, cheese and mushroom filling is surrounded by crisp, golden dough. Small, handheld appetizers like these are ideal for parties, as they’re easy for guests to grab and snack throughout the game. You can also add Baked Potato Wedges on the side!

Ingredients for Hot Dog Tartlets

  • Olive oil: a good healthy oil for sauteing the mushrooms
  • Mushrooms: adds a delicious earthy flavor and makes these tartlets a little extra special
  • Hot dogs: Use grass-fed/organic for best flavor and nutrition. Slice into bite-size pieces for each tartlet
  • Puff pastry sheets: Crispy and buttery, the perfect base for this quick appetizer
  • Egg white: Brush the pastry to give it an extra crispy texture and golden color
  • Cheddar cheese: Goes perfectly with the hot dogs and mushrooms
  • Green onion: Adds extra flavor and a pop of color

Can I use other pastry to make these tartlets?

I recommend using puff pastry for this not only because it’s super easy to find in most supermarkets but because it gives the perfect texture to these easy appetizers. Puff pastry is crispy on the outside but soft and light on the inside with a delicious buttery flavor that just works so well with the mushrooms, hot dogs and cheese.

If you’d prefer more of a crunchy texture then you could try phyllo pastry or pie crust pastry. If you do decide to use either of those pastries you’ll need to use a muffin or cupcake pan and form the pastry into rough cups before filling because they don’t puff up like, well, puff pastry does. Or just use phyllo dough cups, which I used for my Sausage Phyllo Cups, since it is already formed into small cups.

Puff pastry makes things much easier and you don’t need a special pan to make them.

How to Make Cheesy Hot Dog Appetizers in 4 Easy Steps

  1. Heat olive oil in a large nonstick pan to medium-high heat. Add mushrooms and cook, stirring often, until browned and tender. Remove from heat, cool slightly then chop. Set aside.
  2. Open pastry sheets on a flat, floured surface. Use a cookie cutter (or edge of a glass) to cut each sheet into circles. Place circles on a parchment lined baking sheet. Brush tops with egg white.
  3. Place about 1-teaspoon of chopped mushroom in the center of each. Sprinkle with cheese, add three hot dog slices, then sprinkle the center with more cheese. Be sure to leave edges of pastry open so they puff up.
  4. Bake then sprinkle with green onion.

Serving suggestions

When hosting a party, it’s all about presentation and variety. Try different garnishes and present with desired condiments or dipping sauces. I like to serve them with ketchup or mustard (classic hotdog condiments).

Serve these Cheesy Hot Dog Tartlets to your guests during your Homegate party and they’ll disappear quickly. Be prepared to make (at least) another batch or pair with more of your favorite party appetizer recipes. You can also top it with a fresh Coleslaw Salad or just serve it as sides.
